Custom Kitchen Bulkhead Construction

Bulkheads close the gap between your wall cabinets and the ceiling, hiding ducting, wiring, and plumbing while giving your kitchen a clean, built-in appearance. We build, plaster, and finish bulkheads that look like they have always been part of your home.

Typical price range: $400 - $1,800

About Bulkhead Construction

The gap between the top of wall cabinets and the ceiling is one of the most common eyesores in a kitchen renovation. It collects dust, looks unfinished, and wastes space. A well-constructed bulkhead eliminates all three problems, giving your kitchen the polished, custom look of a high-end installation at a fraction of the cost.

Our bulkheads are framed with lightweight steel or timber, depending on your ceiling structure and local building requirements. The frame is securely anchored to ceiling joists and wall studs, then clad in moisture-resistant plasterboard. All joints are taped, mudded, and sanded smooth so the finished bulkhead blends seamlessly with your ceiling.

Bulkheads serve a practical purpose beyond aesthetics. They provide a concealed channel for range hood ducting and LED lighting strips. If you need wiring or plumbing routed through the bulkhead, your electrician or plumber should complete that work before we close it up.

We build bulkheads in various profiles to match your kitchen design. A standard box bulkhead sits flush with the front of your wall cabinets. A stepped bulkhead extends past the cabinet face to create a shadow line or accommodate recessed lighting. An angled bulkhead follows a sloped ceiling line for attic or loft kitchens.

Every bulkhead we build is finished to a paint-ready or paint-complete standard. We can match your existing ceiling texture or deliver a smooth finish ready for your painter. If you want integrated LED strip lighting along the bottom edge, we install the channel — your electrician handles the final connection.

How It Works

1

Design & Measurement

We measure the space above your cabinets, discuss profile options, and plan the bulkhead dimensions to align with cabinet faces and ceiling features.

2

Service Routing

Before the bulkhead is closed, any ducting is routed inside the structure. If you need wiring or plumbing concealed, your electrician or plumber should complete this before we proceed.

3

Framing & Cladding

We build the frame from steel or timber, anchor it to the ceiling and walls, and clad it in moisture-resistant plasterboard.

4

Taping, Mudding & Sanding

All joints are taped and mudded in multiple coats, then sanded smooth to create a seamless surface indistinguishable from the surrounding ceiling.

5

Finishing & Handover

The bulkhead is primed and, if requested, painted to match your ceiling. LED channels are tested and the finished result is inspected for quality.

Bulkhead Construction — Frequently Asked Questions

The terms are often used interchangeably in kitchen contexts. Both refer to the enclosed box above wall cabinets that bridges the gap to the ceiling. We build both to the same structural and finish standard.

A standard kitchen bulkhead is typically framed and clad in one day, with a second day for taping, sanding, and finishing. Paint drying time may add an additional day.

Yes. One of the primary purposes of a kitchen bulkhead is to conceal range hood ducting. We size the bulkhead to fit the duct diameter and route it to the external vent point.

If your cabinets reach the ceiling, a bulkhead is not necessary. However, a small trim bulkhead can still be useful to cover any uneven gap between the cabinet top and an imperfectly level ceiling.

Yes. We install an aluminum LED channel along the bottom face of the bulkhead and run low-voltage wiring to a switch point. Your electrician then connects the transformer and switch.

We deliver a smooth, paint-ready surface as standard. If your ceiling has a specific texture, we can replicate it or work with your plasterer to ensure a seamless match.
